Ampleforth (AMPL) is a crypto/Web3 project built on the Ethereum blockchain, featuring a unique approach to digital currency through its elastic supply mechanism. Its native token, AMPL, is an ERC-20 token designed to automatically adjust its circulating supply based on market demand. The core functionality of Ampleforth revolves around a daily process called "rebasing," which typically occurs around 2 AM UTC. The protocol aims to stabilize the AMPL token's value relative to a target price, specifically the CPI-adjusted 2019 US dollar. If the market price of AMPL deviates significantly from this target (e.g., beyond a 5% threshold), the protocol initiates a rebase. During an expansion phase, if demand is high and the AMPL price is above its target, the protocol automatically and proportionally increases the number of AMPL tokens in every user's wallet. Conversely, during a contraction phase, if demand is low and the price falls below the target, the supply of AMPL tokens in user wallets is proportionally decreased. This rebase mechanism is non-dilutive, meaning that while the quantity of tokens in a user's wallet changes, their percentage ownership of the total AMPL supply remains constant. Ampleforth's design aims to create an uncollateralized, independent form of digital money that can adapt to market fluctuations. It is intended to serve as a fundamental building block within decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems, with potential applications in lending, borrowing, derivatives, and as collateral for decentralized stablecoins. The project also includes a governance token called FORTH, which empowers its holders to participate in decisions regarding the protocol's future.
