What is STACKS (STX)?

Stacks (STX) is a crypto project that functions as a Bitcoin Layer-2 (L2) solution, aiming to bring smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to the Bitcoin blockchain without altering Bitcoin itself. Its purpose is to extend Bitcoin's capabilities, allowing developers to build advanced applications that leverage Bitcoin's security and stability. Stacks was originally known as Blockstack and rebranded in 2020. The core of how Stacks operates is its unique consensus mechanism called Proof of Transfer (PoX). PoX reuses Bitcoin's proof-of-work system, where Stacks miners transfer Bitcoin to participate in block production. In return for securing the network, these miners are rewarded with STX tokens. The Bitcoin transferred by miners is then distributed to STX token holders who "stack" their tokens, essentially locking them up to support network security and earn Bitcoin rewards. This mechanism allows Stacks to anchor its blockchain to Bitcoin, inheriting Bitcoin's robust security. Transactions on Stacks eventually settle on the Bitcoin blockchain, providing an additional layer of security. Stacks utilizes its own smart contract programming language called Clarity. Clarity is designed for predictability and security, making it easier for developers to write reliable smart contracts. It is an interpreted language, meaning its code is human-readable and deployed directly on the blockchain, enhancing transparency. Clarity smart contracts can also read the state of the Bitcoin blockchain, enabling them to be triggered by Bitcoin transactions. The STX token is the native cryptocurrency of the Stacks network. It is used for paying transaction fees, executing smart contracts, and for governance, where STX holders can vote on protocol changes. Stacks also features sBTC, a decentralized Bitcoin pegging solution that allows Bitcoin to be used within Stacks dApps, expanding Bitcoin's utility for various decentralized finance (DeFi) activities. STACKS (STX) FAQ

Stacks is a cryptocurrency project designed as a Bitcoin Layer-2 (L2) solution. Its primary goal is to bring smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to the Bitcoin blockchain without altering Bitcoin itself. This innovative approach extends Bitcoin's capabilities, allowing developers to build on its robust security. The project was originally known as Blockstack and rebranded to Stacks in 2020.
Stacks operates by leveraging Bitcoin as its secure base layer. It utilizes a unique consensus mechanism called Proof of Transfer (PoX), where Stacks miners commit already mined BTC to earn new STX tokens. Transactions on the Stacks blockchain are then settled on the Bitcoin blockchain, inheriting its unparalleled security. Stacks also uses its own programming language, Clarity, specifically designed for secure and predictable smart contracts.
The native STX token serves several key functions within the Stacks ecosystem. It's used to pay gas fees for executing smart contracts and interacting with dApps, facilitating transaction processing, and registering new digital assets on the Stacks layer. Additionally, STX holders can "Stack" their tokens, locking them up temporarily to support network security and consensus, in return earning Bitcoin (BTC) rewards. STX holders also participate in governance, voting on protocol upgrades and treasury grants.
Stacking is the process where STX holders lock their tokens to support the Stacks network's security and consensus. As a reward, participants earn Bitcoin (BTC). While conceptually similar to staking in Proof-of-Stake networks, Stacking is distinct because rewards are earned in BTC (the 'burnchain' token) rather than in the same token that was locked (STX). Furthermore, there is no slashing mechanism in PoX; if Stackers fail in their duties, they simply don't receive BTC rewards, and their STX remains locked.
Stacks is fundamentally a Bitcoin Layer-2 solution. It significantly extends Bitcoin's functionality by enabling smart contracts and decentralized applications to utilize Bitcoin as a secure base layer. Crucially, Stacks achieves this without directly modifying Bitcoin's core protocol. All transactions processed on Stacks are ultimately settled on the Bitcoin blockchain, thereby inheriting its inherent security, immutability, and decentralization, ensuring a strong connection to Bitcoin's foundational strengths.
Stacks stands out due to several key features. It boasts Bitcoin-anchored security, leveraging Bitcoin's unmatched decentralization as its foundation. Its novel Proof of Transfer (PoX) consensus mechanism allows STX holders to earn Bitcoin rewards. Stacks utilizes its own decidable smart contract language, Clarity, which prioritizes predictability and security for developers. Additionally, STX was notably the first cryptocurrency to receive SEC qualification for a sale in the United States, highlighting its commitment to regulatory compliance.
