Hive is a decentralized and open-source blockchain built to power Web3 applications, specifically focusing on social media, digital content, and gaming. It officially launched in March 2020 following a community driven hard fork from the Steem blockchain. The fork was motivated by the community desire to maintain a decentralized network after the previous platform founding company was acquired by an outside entity. The network utilizes a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism. In this system, token holders vote for witnesses who are responsible for processing transactions and securing the network. This setup allows the blockchain to achieve high speeds with blocks produced every three seconds. One of its most distinct features is a fee less transaction model. Rather than paying fees for every action, users earn resource credits by staking their tokens, which grants them the ability to interact with the network. Central to the project is the concept of Proof of Brain, which is a reward system that incentivizes content creation and curation. When participants post articles, videos, or comments, they can earn rewards based on the upvotes they receive from other community members. This system is designed to distribute value directly to those who contribute to the ecosystem growth and engagement. There are three primary types of assets within the system. The liquid token is used for everyday transactions and is easily transferable. When this token is committed to the network through staking, it becomes Hive Power, which increases a user influence in voting and governance. The third asset is an algorithmic token designed for stability to provide a more predictable unit of account within the ecosystem. Governance is managed in a decentralized manner through a system known as the Decentralized Hive Fund. This is a community governed treasury where stakeholders vote on proposals to determine which development and marketing projects receive support. This ensures that the direction of the blockchain is determined by its users rather than a central authority or corporation. The ecosystem is home to hundreds of decentralized applications. These include social blogging sites, video platforms, and popular blockchain games. Because the blockchain is designed for high frequency interactions and provides human readable usernames, it is widely used for projects that require a user friendly experience similar to traditional social media but with the benefits of decentralization and data ownership.
