Nodle Network is a decentralized physical infrastructure network, often referred to as a DePIN, that connects the digital and physical worlds by using smartphones as network nodes. Founded in 2017, the project aims to build a global wireless network for the Internet of Things without the need for traditional, expensive cellular infrastructure. Instead, it leverages the existing Bluetooth Low Energy capabilities and internet connectivity of millions of smartphones. Individuals participate in the network by downloading the Nodle app. Once active, the smartphone becomes an edge node that can detect and communicate with nearby smart devices, sensors, and trackers. This crowdsourced approach allows the network to provide low-cost connectivity for a wide variety of use cases, such as tracking logistics pallets, locating lost vehicles, and monitoring smart city infrastructure. The system uses a mechanism called Proof of Connectivity to verify the data transmitted by nodes and reward participants for their contributions. The project recently underwent a significant technological shift by migrating its core operations and token from the Polkadot ecosystem to zkSync Era, a layer 2 scaling solution on Ethereum. This move was intended to improve transaction speeds, lower fees, and enhance interoperability within the broader Ethereum ecosystem. While it previously operated as a Polkadot parachain, the team is sunsetting that legacy bridge to focus entirely on the new architecture. Beyond simple connectivity, Nodle has expanded into digital trust and media authentication. One of its key products is an application called Click, which allows users to capture photos and videos with verified metadata. This is part of a larger effort to combat deepfakes and misinformation by proving the exact time, location, and source of digital content using blockchain technology. The project also features a programmable layer known as Smart Missions. These are decentralized tasks that developers can deploy to the network, which are then executed by the distributed nodes. Examples include geolocation-based services or environmental data collection. The native token, NODL, serves as the utility and governance asset of the ecosystem. It is used to reward node operators, pay for network services, and allow holders to participate in decisions regarding the protocol's development. By repurposing the world's existing smartphone infrastructure, Nodle seeks to create a more accessible and energy-efficient way to connect billions of devices globally.
