Pocket Network is a decentralized data infrastructure protocol designed to provide reliable and censorship-resistant access to blockchain data. It acts as a middleware layer that connects decentralized applications, commonly known as dApps, to various blockchain networks through a distributed network of independent nodes. This setup aims to solve the problem of over-reliance on centralized service providers, which can act as single points of failure or gatekeepers for blockchain access. The core functionality of the network revolves around Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services. When a developer builds an application, it needs to read and write data to a blockchain. Instead of the developer running their own full node or using a central provider, Pocket Network routes these requests to a global pool of thousands of independent node operators. These operators are incentivized to provide high uptime and accurate data. The system is comprised of three main entities: Applications, Nodes, and the Network Layer. Applications are the clients that request blockchain data. Nodes are the service providers that process these requests by relaying them to the intended blockchains. The Network Layer consists of the protocol rules and the blockchain that coordinates these interactions. To ensure security and performance, the network uses a session-based mechanism that pseudo-randomly groups applications with specific nodes for a set period. The POKT token is the native utility token of the ecosystem. It is primarily used for staking by both node operators and developers. Node operators must stake the token to join the network and earn rewards for servicing data requests. Developers and application owners stake or use the token to gain access to the network's bandwidth and throughput. Beyond its technical utility, the token also grants holders governance rights within the Pocket DAO, allowing the community to vote on protocol upgrades, treasury management, and other key decisions. Recent developments include the Shannon upgrade, which transitions the network into a more generalized data fabric. This evolution allows the protocol to support not just blockchain data, but also AI models, Web2 APIs, and other decentralized data services. This upgrade also introduces more efficient token mechanics, such as a burn system tied to network usage, which aims to align the supply of the token with the actual demand for the services provided by the network. Currently, Pocket Network supports dozens of different blockchains, making it a multi-chain infrastructure solution for the broader Web3 ecosystem.
