Ripple USD (RLUSD) FAQ
RLUSD is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, designed specifically for price stability. Unlike XRP, which is a volatile digital asset used as a bridge for liquidity, RLUSD provides a steady value for payments and settlements. They are complementary tools within the Ripple ecosystem; RLUSD offers a stable medium of exchange while XRP facilitates rapid settlement. It is a private stablecoin issued by a Ripple subsidiary, not a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
Each RLUSD token is backed 1:1 by a segregated reserve of U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries, and cash equivalents. It is a highly regulated digital asset, issued under a New York Trust Charter and overseen by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). To ensure transparency, Ripple provides monthly third-party attestations verifying that the reserves fully cover the circulating supply.
RLUSD is natively issued on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum. Ethereum is often used for its deep liquidity in decentralized finance, while the XRPL is utilized for high-speed, low-cost payments. To receive RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, users must manually set up a "Trust Line" to the official issuer account and maintain a minimum XRP balance to keep the account active.
RLUSD is available on several major trading platforms, including LBank and other global exchanges. It can also be accessed through decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like the XRPL DEX or Uniswap on Ethereum. While retail users typically trade RLUSD for other assets on these exchanges, direct redemption for fiat currency is generally reserved for institutional partners through specialized portals.
RLUSD is designed to enhance the XRP Ledger by attracting developers and institutions that require a stable on-ramp for their operations. Rather than replacing XRP, RLUSD adds a layer of utility that can increase overall transaction volume on the ledger. It serves as an enterprise-grade tool for cross-border payments and institutional settlements, providing the stability necessary for traditional financial integration.
