When a user wanted to move BUSD to the Moonriver network, the original tokens were locked in a secure contract on the source chain, and an equivalent amount of bridged BUSD was minted on Moonriver. This allowed users to utilize stablecoin liquidity within the Moonriver decentralized finance ecosystem. The protocol relied on Multi-Party Computation technology to manage the private keys required for these cross-chain transfers. The project encountered a critical turning point in July 2023 when the Multichain protocol suffered a major security breach. Approximately 130 million dollars in various assets were drained from its bridge contracts across multiple networks, including Moonriver. Following the exploit, the Multichain team confirmed that they had lost access to their servers and that the project's chief executive officer had been detained by authorities. These events led to a complete halt of the bridge's operations. Because the bridge is no longer functional, the Multichain Bridged BUSD on Moonriver has lost its primary utility and its connection to the underlying collateral. The assets are effectively unbacked because the bridge contracts that were supposed to hold the reserve funds were either emptied or are no longer accessible. Consequently, this version of BUSD has permanently lost its intended stable value and no longer functions as a reliable stablecoin. The Multichain team and various security researchers have advised all users to stop using the service and to revoke any active smart contract approvals associated with the protocol to prevent further potential risks. While the Moonriver network itself continues to operate normally, the specific tokens issued through the Multichain bridge remain in a legacy state with no confirmed path for recovery or resumption of services.
