Report: OpenAI Completes $11 Billion New Funding Round at $1.25 Trillion Valuation, with SoftBank, Sequoia Capital and Others Participating

According to people familiar with the matter, OpenAI has completed approximately $11 billion in new funding, the first portion of a financing round valuing the company at $1.25 trillion. The funds were transferred to the company’s account on Friday. The remaining portion of the round—which could total as much as $20 billion—is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. After postponing its initial public offering (IPO) plans, the AI developer has been in talks for more than a month about a large funding round. OpenAI initially planned to raise $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation, then scaled back its plans amid a steep public-market selloff in the AI sector. Investors participating in the first closing include Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price. Other investors in the round include SoftBank Group, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz. A consortium of investors from the United Arab Emirates has also joined. OpenAI is working with investment banks to raise funds from high-net-worth individuals and retail investors. (Bloomberg)
